Born in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul,
in 1934, very young showed his interest in architecture, under the influence of
his grandfather, which at that time was an architect
and contractor. Being approved on the examinations for the Architecture School
of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande
do Sul, with the first place, proceeded
its studies at the National Faculty of Architecture in Rio de Janeiro, where he graduated in 1957. Coming
to Rio de Janeiro, a town with a legitimate
"school of architecture", during the main events that built Brasilia, was a
contingency that much influenced his career.
Edison Musa, like
many of his contemporaries, was an admirer of Le Corbusier. Going to Paris, he worked with
Georges Candilis, one of the main followers and
author of one of the main revisions of Corbusean
rational town. Musa choose a less theoretic and more pragmatic way, typical of
the many professionals that did not submit themselves to the main currents of
the Rio’s School. Being in touch with
construction sites since his student days, young Musa faced all the
difficulties in the Brazilian way of construction, in a
learning on site experience, much important for his later work. Opening
his own office in 1963, Edison Musa already had the knowledge and experience of
a production system of projects on a large scale- lesson he learned with Candilis- in contrast with the little and volatile
Brazilian atelier of architecture of those days. Understand the needs of the
client, and solve them on a fast track system, equate the essential for further
detailing of the proposal are the main points of a methodology of work, that
has ripen along the years, establishing at the same time its conceptual base
and "modus operandi", becoming each time more sophisticated as the
new projects became more complex. A posture where the
resolution of the problems of the client is above his own needs of creation.
Edison Musa is the current president of AsBEA,
Brazilian Association of Architecture Offices and has been chosen Personality
in Architecture for 1993, by Sinaenco, the National
Syndicate of Consulting Architects and Engineers.
